INSPIRATION

When and why did you buy the property?

Feb 2015. We made the decision to sell our home in New York and move to Ireland.

What was your inspiration for your home/build/restoration/extension?

We needed a space with enough room for both of us to work/live and took inspiration from "Viking Longhouse" one large open space.

What were your initial plans/intentions?

To create a home which serves the two of us, and can expand to accommodate our three kids when they visit.

How important was the eco-factor in these original intentions?

All materials and our craftsmen were LOCALLY sourced.  Wood, steel, plumbing etc.

How important was the design?

Essential to our ability to live and function in a new country and build a new life for ourselves.

TYPE OF HOUSE

Sean MacDiarmada’s old school house

POINT OF INTEREST

We run a small pipe from a waterfall in the field behind us - built a series of stone steps - (our own little water feature) and added a Koi pond.

ECO ELEMENTS

We took a derelict stone school house and brought it back to life.

Using re-purposed and local materials onLy - was the imperative.

Re-purposed/architectural salvage/local sawmills for all lumbar/local stone/local craftspeople.  We created a great home for our family, using an old building that was crumbling away in a field !
